What’s involved?

The Practical driving test takes about 40 minutes to complete and during this time you will be assessed by a DVSA examiner.

They will be assessing your driving ability to ensure that you are safe and competent to be able to drive on your own. Your eyesight will be assessed to ensure that you fulfil the DVLA minimum requirement to read a vehicle registration plate from a distance of 20.5 metres (67ft).

You will be asked 2 questions from the Show me/ Tell me vehicle safety check question bank. Your test will involve driving in various road and traffic situations. You will also be asked to demonstrate your ability to complete 1 of the 4 manoeuvres you have been taught.

You will possibly be asked to demonstrate an emergency stop. There will be a 10 minute phase of independent driving on your test where you will either be asked to follow directional road signs or to follow a short list of directions (displayed on a diagram).

The main DVSA driving test centre that AMF driving instructors cover is Macclesfield but when necessary we will look at using other local test centres.

To book your practical test you will need to be in possession of the following information:

  • Provisional driving licence number
  • Theory test certificate number
  • ADI registration number
  • £62 (as of June 2014) (Payment to be made either by debit or credit card)
  • Valid email address

Basic Vehicle Knowledge

Part of the Theory test now concern legal requirements and rules of the road. It also tests knowledge of how your vehicle works, with topics including interior controls, brakes and suspension. Questions may also cover steering, tyres and the battery.

Highway Code

The Highway Code is a set of information, advice, guides and mandatory rules for road users in the United Kingdom. Its objective is to promote road safety. The Highway Code applies to all road users including pedestrians, horse riders and cyclists, as well as motorcyclists and drivers.

Driving Manoeuvres

You may be a confident learner driver preparing to take your test, nevertheless, even some of the best drivers have problems with the standard driving manoeuvres, consisting of bay parking, reverse bay parking, parallel parking and an emergency stop. We’ll make sure you have the skills needed!

Road Safety

Road Safety is an important part of learning to drive, not just for yourself, but other road users too, such as pedestrians and cyclists. We’ll make sure you know the safest way to operate a vehicle at all times.

Drivers Theory Examination

You won’t be able book your practical test until you have a valid theory test certificate in your possession. We will help you to prepare for your driving theory test as you gain experience behind the wheel.

Driving Test Certification

The driving test itself will cover a number of different skills, such as independent driving ability, reversing, parking, emergency stops, and many other elements. We will ensure you are trained and ready for each element.

How much does it cost?

As of 5th Feb 2024 we charge £40 per hour, and we also offer our discount for block bookings!

Yes! If you would prefer to prepay for a block of 10 hours then we can offer a discount making the total £390.

We can’t guarantee you’ll pass, as it is up to you on the day of your test. What we can do is ensure you are fully prepared for all aspects of your test giving you the best chance of success!

We’re quite flexible when we can provide our lessons, so please just get in touch and we will see if we can assist

Firstly, don’t worry! Not everybody passes their test the first time. If you do fail, we will do a few more lessons and go over the points you failed on to ensure you are ready for the next one!

How Long Are The Lessons?

Lessons normally can be 1 hour, 1.5 hour or 2 hour durations but if required the duration can be adapted to your personal needs.

No problem, just give us as much notice as possible. If we can, we will re-arrange your lesson for the same week so you don’t lose any progress.

We are fully insured and our vehicles have a high safety rating. We also have dual control vehicles, so we can intervene in the case of a dangerous situation.
